Our History

Study Elementary School is named for Justin Nelson Study, often referred to as Professor Study, who was superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools from 1896 until he died 1917. He started his career as a teacher and served as superintendent at Indiana schools for 46 years. Before coming to FWCS, he was superintendent of schools in Anderson, Greencastle and Richmond. While in Anderson, he studied law and was admitted to the Madison County Bar, though he never practiced law. He also served as a member of the State Board of Education for 22 years. Shortly after his death, the Board of School Commissioners adopted an In Memoriam that stated, "From whatever viewpoint the mind, heart and life of Justin Nelson Study may be studied, it will be found that he was a Stalwart American gentleman, whose death was a heavy loss to his family, to his city and to his state."

Study School was built in 1926 and was the site of a unique partnership in the 1990s. From 1993-1999, Washington and Study elementary schools were considered one school with two campuses. Pre-K through second grades were housed at Washington with third through fifth grades at Study. Today, Study is a Title I school and offers the English Language Learners (ELL) program. Students attending Study feed into Kekionga Middle School and South Side High School. The school is located in the Board of School Trustees District 5.
